CORTLAND, N.Y.  –  The Oswego State Women’s Hockey team earned another hard-fought victory against the Cortland Red Dragons. This completed their second straight sweep of a NEWHL opponent. Joanna Hiebert played a brilliant game, and her impressive goaltending shut out the Red Dragons.

THE BASICS

Final Score: Oswego State 1 (5-3, 5-1 NEWHL), #12 Cortland 0 (4-2)

Location: Alumni Arena, Cortland, NY

HOW IT HAPPENED

The first period was scoreless, with Oswego looking like the faster team for most of the period.

Oswego outshot Cortland 8-7 in the first period.

Joanna Hiebert had seven saves, and the Lakers continued their penalty kill success.

The second period was an extremely narrow 20 minutes, with neither team grabbing the lead.

Oswego killed two more penalties during the period, with Hiebert making several high-pressure saves during Cortland power plays. She totaled 15 saves in the second period.

Much of the third period was, again, hotly contested, until Morgan Shines found the back of the net with less than five minutes remaining in the game, giving Oswego a 1-0 lead that they would not relinquish. It was Shines’ first goal of the year; she was assisted by Kensie Malone.

Hiebert ended the game with 31 saves, including three in the final two minutes.

For the game, the Lakers limited their penalties and maximized the opportunities that came their way on even strength.

WHAT’S NEXT

The women will return to Oswego to face the William Smith Herons on Tuesday, November 22.
