Women’s Hockey Drops 1-0 Heartbreaker to Pioneers

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Mustangs dropped a heartbreaker on Tuesday night on their home ice in a non-conference battle with local rival, Utica College 1-0.

  • Final Score: Morrisville 0, Utica 1
  • Location: Morrisville, N.Y.
  • Records: Morrisville 3-6-1, Utica 9-2-0

  • The Mustangs and Pioneers skated toe-to-toe for the bulk of the contest on Tuesday night, but neither squad was able to find the back of the net.
  • Morrisville had chances early, as Utica found themselves in penalty trouble throughout the first period.
  • The Mustangs posted 7 of their 8 shots on goal in the period throughout their power play opportunities, but were unable to convert their chances.
  • Utica turned momentum in their favor slightly in the second, doubling up Morrisville in shots on goal 13-6.
  • Utica’s persistence paid off late in the third, capitalizing on a Morrisville penalty with a power play goal at the 16:06 mark to take the 1-0 lead.
  • The Mustangs kept pressure on the Pioneers, taking control of the puck which allowed them to pull goaltender, Mak Ganje (Vail, Colo.) in favor of an extra skater.
  • Unfortunately, the push was not enough to tie the score.
  • Ganje suffered the hard luck loss in net despite picking up 30 saves on the night.

The Mustangs will hit the road on Saturday to wrap up the 2021 portion of their schedule with a Northeast Women’s Hockey League (NEWHL) contest at Buffalo State.  Game time is set for 3 PM against the Bengals.
