SUNY Canton (1-0-1) – 3
Utica College (0-0-1) – 3
The first ever meeting between the Utica College Pioneers and the SUNY Canton Kangaroos ended in a draw in front of a sold out crowd at the Adirondack Bank Center on Saturday afternoon. It was the AmeriCU Carol M. Baldwin Jersey Night to raise money for the cancer research fund. UC wore black and pink sweaters instead of their normal blue and orange. Even the referees got into the spirit of the night by wearing pink and black sweaters.
The Roos struck first with a goal from senior Tyson Bruce (Oswego State) at 11:29 in the first period. Jesse Farabee (Oswego State) had his first assist of the night. Utica answered on a power play goal with 1:17 left in the first. Daniel Fritz (Canisius College) hit the back of the net with an assist from Brandon Osmundson.
Utica took the lead in the second period after an earlier goal was waived for a crease violation. This time Osmundson and Fritz got the puck to Tyler Pietrowski (Odessa Jackalopes) who lofted it into the net at 16:28.
The Roos came back in the third. Farabee earned his second assist of the night by feeding the puck to Matthew Headland (Corpus Christi IceRays) on a power play goal at 5:45. A few minutes later, at 8:57 the Roos took the lead with an unassisted goal by AJ D’Orazio (Oswego State). At 13:20 Donovan Ott (RPI) scored his first DIII goal to tie it up for Utica. John Moncovich (Hampton Road Whalers) was credited with the assist to send the game into overtime.
A five minute overtime resulted in no pucks in the back of the net. Utica goalie Gianluca Baggetta (North York) played the entire game and made 24 saves. SUNY Canton goalie Michael Cerasuolo (Brockville Braves) also played the entire game and made 27 saves.
The Pioneers open UCHC play on a weekend trip south next weekend. On Friday the Pioneers will take on Manhattanville College at 7:00pm. Saturday afternoon (4:00pm) Utica faces off against Neumann University.
