Pittston, PA – The Utica University women’s hockey team carried its offense from Friday’s 10-0 win at King’s College into Saturday with another 10-0 shutout win over the Monarchs.
The Pioneers jumped ahead 1-0 at 11:41 in the first period off a Tess Barrett (Tewksbury, MA/St. Mark’s) power-play goal assisted by Georgiana Santullo (Woburn, MA/Boston Shamrocks/Woburn High School). That served to be the lone goal for the team over the first 20 minutes of action while attempting 39 shots on goal and taking 19 of 20 faceoffs.
Utica produced more offense in the second period as the team netted three goals between the 8:35 and 13:57 marks.
At 8:35, Erica Sloan (Potsdam, NY/St. Lawrence Steel) found Santullo for a short-handed tally and then less than two minutes later, Molly Pedone (Trinity, FL/Robert Morris) put in an unassisted goal to put the Pioneers ahead 3-0. Just before the 14 minute mark, Cortney Staniszewski (Buffalo, NY/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) scored on a power-play with assists by Abby Lillis (West Seneca, NY/Buffalo Bisons) and Carolyn Whitney (Raleigh, NC/Milbrook School).
As the period winded down, Utica scored twice more in a 10 second span. At 18:21, Whitney rocketed in an unassisted goal while 10 seconds later following the faceoff, Erica Sheaffer (New Hartford, NY/Wilkes University) put on into the back of the net for the Pioneers to lead 6-0 after two periods.
Entering the third, Utica held a 55-4 shot on goal advantage along with going 37-for-45 on faceoffs.
Maggie Rylott (Cobourg, Ontario/West Northumberland) joined the scoring fun less than one minute into the final period of play. Following a King’s faceoff win, Utica regained possession while passes from Lillis and Holly Silva (Boston, MA/Worcester Academy) to Rylott propelled the Pioneers to a 7-0 lead on its second shot attempt of the third period just 49 seconds in.
Utica went on to score twice more in the span of 15 seconds as Silva (7:33) and Santullo (7:48) gave the team a 9-0 lead in a blink of an eye. Hailey Modlin (Phoenix, AZ/Boston Shamrocks) added one more for good measure with under four minutes to play for her second goal of the year to complete the Pioneers’ weekend trip with a bang.
Nine different players scored for Utica with Santullo being the lone multi-goal scorer. She also led the team with three points followed by Lillis, Silva and Whitney with a pair each. In goal, Maddie Esposito (Ashburn, VA/Boston Shamrocks) earned a win after recording four saves in 30:28 of work while Breese Burlingame (Binghamton, NY/Northfield Mount Herman) also provided a clean sheet with no goals allowed over 29:21.
Utica (3-1-1, 3-0-1 UCHC) will begin a five-game homestand at 4 p.m. on Friday, November 18 against Stevenson University. The game is set to be the first-ever game played by the Pioneers at the Nexus center.
