Three Orange skaters earned College Hockey America (CHA) Player of the Week honors after leading led Syracuse to the ‘Battle at the Burgh’ championship in Pittsburgh, Pa. on New Year’s weekend. Senior goaltender Arielle DeSmet, senior forward Abby Moloughney and senior defenseman Shelby Calof added the CHA honors to their ‘Battle at the Burgh’ All-Tournament Team recognition. Syracuse advanced to the championship game by winning a shootout after a 3-3 tie with Boston University in the semifinal. The Orange won the title with a 5-2 win against St. Cloud State.
DeSmet, the Battle at the Burgh Most Valuable Player, recorded 63 saves in two games. On Saturday she had 32 saves and then turned away all four Boston University shots in the shootout to help propel the Orange to the championship game. She recorded 31 saves in the championship game. In 2021-22 DeSmet ranks 16th nationally and second in the CHA in save percentage (.931), and second in the CHA saves per game (27.67). It is her third CHA Goaltender of the Week honor this season.
Moloughney scored three goals, including the game-winning goal against St. Cloud State and a power play goal, and had one assist in the two games. Her five power play goals this season ties for seventh on the Syracuse single-season record list and her 13 career power play goals ties for fourth in Syracuse history. In 2021-22, Moloughney ranks fourth in CHA in points (19), third in goals (10) and 11th in assists (9). She has 92 career points, including 39 goals and 53 assists. She has 26 multi-point games, which ties for second in Syracuse history. This is Moloughney’s second CHA Forward of the Week honor this season.
Calof earned CHA Defenseman of the Week honors for the first time this season after propelling the Orange to the championship game of the tournament with her shoot-out goal against BU. After each team had three opportunities in the shootout, Calof came on for the fourth Syracuse attempt and scored when she fired a shot past BU goalie Kate Stuart. She also had an assist against the Terriers. Calof scored a power play goal to get Syracuse on the board against St. Cloud State in the championship game.

Syracuse will play a weekend series at Minnesota State on Friday, Jan. 7th (4 pm) and Saturday, Jan. 8th (3 pm). Both games will be streamed via Big Ten +. The Orange return home for a weekend home-and-home series against CHA opponent RIT at Tennity Ice Pavilion on Friday, Jan. 21st (7 pm) and at RIT on Saturday, Jan. 22nd (3 pm).
