STEVENSON, MD- The Utica College women’s hockey team picked up another lopsided victory Friday night as it downed Stevenson University 8-2 in UCHC action. Junior Erica Sloan (Potsdam, NY/St. Lawrence Steel) led Utica with six points on the day.
Sloan got things started at 11:57 of the first as she netted an unassisted short-handed goal to give the Pioneers the 1-0 lead. This marks the second straight game that Sloan has scored a short-handed goal for the Pioneers.
Utica tacked on an insurance tally at 17:20 as Carly Stefanini (Framingham, MA/Brooks School) put in her fourth of the year, assisted by Sloan and Georgiana Santullo (Woburn, MA/Boston Shamrocks/Woburn High School).
UC came out of the locker room flying in the second period and was quickly rewarded as Sloan netted her second of the day just 39 seconds into the second stanza. Stefanini and Sirena Fitzery (Hamburg, NY/Buffalo Bisons) were credited with assists on the play.
Stevenson was finally able to break the deadlock at 2:43 when Karly Aguirre put in a feed from Hannah Labbe and Trinity Barcless to cut the deficit to two. This marked the first time in five games that Utica had given up a goal. The Pioneers’ shutout streak ended at 262:43, marking the third longest shutout streak in program history.
Stefanini once against connected with Santullo and Sloan, this time at 18:21, to regain the three-goal lead heading into the final frame.
The third period was all Utica as the Pioneers added four more scores over the final 20 minutes. Sloan put in her third of the day, while Santullo netted two of her own and Carolyn Whitney (Raleigh, NC/Milbrook School) also found the back of the net. Hailey Modlin (Phoenix, AZ/Boston Shamrocks), Nicole Fitzgerald (Mechanicsburg, PA/The Hill School), Alexa Carlon (Lakewood, NY/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles), and Holly Silva (Boston, MA/Worcester Academy) each recorded one assist in the win.
Sloan matched her career-high of six points as she totaled one goal and five assists against Wilkes on March 12, 2021. This did however mark Sloan’s first career hat trick and it was also the fourth time in the last five games that a Pioneer has scored at least three goals in a single outing.
Savannah Gutierrez (Huntington Beach, CA/Anaheim Lady Ducks) made 14 saves in net to pick up her third win of the year. Ainsley King and Olivia DeGuire meanwhile combined for 16 saves.
The teams wrap up the season series Saturday. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
