The Section III Finals were held last night at the Onondaga County War Memorial in Syracuse, NY. The winner of each would claim the Section III Championship for the respective division and move on to the NYSPHSAA State Tournament.
Up first was the Division II game pitting state-ranked #3 Cortland-Homer (13-4-2) against #1 Skaneateles (17-1-2). Skaneateles just recently beat Cortland-Homer 4-2 at home on February 8th. The two teams played to a 4-4 tie earlier in the season in Cortland.
Skaneateles came out on top in this one by a score of 4-1. Ryan Gick led the way for the Lakers, who were leading 3-1 after the first period, with two goals. Also scoring was Charlie Major and Bauer Morissey. Cole Heintz, Garrett Krieger, and Cam Lowe contributed one assist each. Goalie Adam Casper finished with 20 saves.
Trevor Jubran scored the only Eagles goal assisted by Josh Cargen. Brandon Ludwig stopped 35 shots in the loss.
Skaneateles will host Section VI Champion Grand Island who is ranked #8 in the state with a 16-2-3 record. Grand Island defeated #6 West Seneca West (15-5-2) by a score of 3-2 last night to win the Section VI title. The Skaneateles-Grand Island game will be played at 6:30pm on Saturday, March 2nd at Allyn Arena.
The Division I game saw #3 Syracuse (19-1-1) face-off against #6 West Genesee (16-5-0) in what turned out to be a four-overtime thriller!
Ryan Eccles and Stephan Matro scored in regulation for the Cougars with Andrew Corning, Ryan Durand, Nathan Frye, and Jack Grooms picking up assists. West Genesee received goals from Jack Miller and Ryan Washo with Jack Anderson and Daniel Holzhauer assisting.
The two teams were tied 2-2 at the end of the second period and the score remained that way until the fourth overtime when Ryan Eccles scored his second of the game from just above the goal line 2:12 into the period.
Alex Moreno finished with 26 saves for Syracuse while Christopher Wells made 53 saves for the Wildcats.
Syracuse will host the Section V Champ on Saturday, March 2nd at 7:30pm at Meachem. They will host either #5 Fairport (15-3-3) or #10 Pittsford (14-6-2) who face-off in the Section V championship game tonight, Tuesday, February 26th.
