CALMAR, PA- The Utica College women’s hockey team came away with an 8-0 thumping of host Arcadia University in its United Collegiate Hockey Contest opener Friday evening. Senior Georgiana Santullo (Woburn, MA/Boston Shamrocks/Woburn High School) netted her second career hat trick in the win.
The Pioneers wasted little time getting on the board as graduate student Rebecca Brown (Steamboat Springs, CO/Norwich University) tallied her first of the year just 1:51 into the game. Sophomore transfers Molly Pedone (Trinity, FL/Robert Morris) and Brooke Hubert (Oceanside, NY/Minnesota State University- Mankato) picked up the assists on the opener. Just 2:58 later, Santullo put in her first of the day, off assists from Alexa Carlon (Lakewood, NY/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) and Carolyn Whitney (Raleigh, NC/Milbrook School) to make it 2-0 in favor of the Pioneers after the opening period.
Utica doubled its lead in the second period thanks to a pair of goals by Santullo to cap off the natural hat trick.
The third period was all Utica as the Pioneers tacked on four more scores in the final frame. Carly Stefanini (Framingham, MA/Brooks School) scored twice in the third, while Hubert and Madison Novotny (Wesley Chapel, FL/Northwood School) each netted their first collegiate goals.
Sirena Fitzery (Hamburg, NY/Buffalo Bisons) finished the day with three assists, while Whitney and Erica Sloan (Potsdam, NY/St. Lawrence Steel) each chipped in with two helpers. Carlon, Cortney Staniszewski (Buffalo, NY/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles), Caley Susitti (Hartland, WI/Milwaukee Jr. Admirals), and Maggie Rylott (Cobourg, Ontario/West Northumberland) each had one assist, and Pedone and freshman Callie McLaughlin (Centerport, NY/New Hampton School) each tallied their first collegiate points with an assist apiece.
Angela Hawthorne (Santa Clara, CA/Meijer) turned aside all 15 shots she faced for her first shutout of the season and the second of her career.
The teams wrap up the season series on Saturday. Puck drop is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
