#14 Utica College (2-0-1, 2-0-0 UCHC) – 6
Neumann (0-2-0, 0-2-0 UCHC) – 2
With less than 24 hours from Friday night’s puck drop at #10 Manhattanville, the #14 Utica College Pioneers were able to complete a UCHC weekend sweep with a 6-2 victory over the Neumann University Knights. Most of the goals scored were the first of the season for both teams.
The Pioneers got on the board first at 4:03 in the first with Kasper Kjellkvist (Curry College) earning his first career goal with the Pioneers. The 6’6″ Swede was assisted by Brandon Young (Johnstown) and Conor Landrigan (Binghamton Jr. Sens). The Pioneers headed into the first intermission with a 1-0 lead.
The second period saw a few more goals. The Pioneers doubled their lead with Justin Allen (Rochester Monarchs) scoring his first goal of the season at 8:30. Brandon Osmundson (Hampton Road Whalers), who earned a hat trick the previous night, and Tyler Pietrowski (Odessa Jackalopes) were credited with the assists. The Knights finally got on the board during a power play when Chris Caldwell (Philadelphia Jr. Flyers) scored his first goal of the season at the 13:19 mark. Barry Kneedler (Philadelphia Jr. Flyers) and Zac Boyle (Florida Eels) assisted him getting it past Utica’s goalie Joseph Giacobbo (Rockland Nationals).
The floodgates opened in the third period. Utica’s Josh Haskin (P.A.L. Jr. Islanders) lit the lamp for the first time this season at 2:09 with assists from Joey Rutkowski (Hampton Road Whalers) and Brett Everson (Hawkesbury). The Knights responded at 3:05 with Barry Kneedler earning his second point of the night with a feed from Eric Madison (Minnesota Iron Rangers) and Devin Joyce (P.A.L. Jr. Islanders). The Pioneers didn’t take long to get that goal back at 4:08. While on a power play, Daniel Fritz earned his first goal of the season by getting the puck past Knights’ goalie Mike Cosentino (Connecticut Oilers). Landrigan and Osmundson had their second assists for the night.
To seal the fate of the Knights, Dante Zapata scored his first goal of the season with a power play goal at 8:27. Rutkowski, with help from Donovan Ott (RPI), assisted Zapata. Not to be left out of the “First Goal Club,” Buster Larsson (Syracuse Stars) found the back of the net at 12:03 to earn his first of the season. Once again, Rutkowski was able to get the puck to Larsson with a pass from Jamie Bucell (Philadelphia).
The Knights’ Cosentino ended the night with 23 saves compared to the Pioneers’ Giacobbo’s 24 saves.
