Orange Select Captains for 2022-23

Five leaders will represent the 2022-23 Orange with a letter on their sweater including captain Lauren Bellefontaine and alternate captains Mae Batherson, Tatum White, Rayla Clemons and Anna Leschyshyn.

Bellefontaine, who was an alternate captain for Syracuse’s 2021-22 College Hockey America (CHA) championship team, is a preseason All-CHA selection this year. In 2021-22, the center earned CHA Best Defensive Forward award and All-CHA Second Team honors, ranked 12th nationally and set the Syracuse single-season record for faceoff wins. The center from Kemptville, Ontario native recorded 22 points with eight goals and 14 assists and had seven multi-point games. Her 51 career assists ties for 10th in Syracuse history. Bellefontaine, who earned her degree in communication and rhetorical studies and is now pursuing a certificate of advanced study in intercollegiate athletic advising and support, is a three-time CHA All-Academic Team honoree.

A native of New Minas, Nova Scotia, Batherson, who recorded seven assists in 2021-22, has 10 goals and 30 assists in 88 career games. The senior defenseman played for the 2022 Hockey Canada National Women’s Development Team this past summer in a three-game series against the United States. Batherson earned CHA Rookie of the Year and was selected to the All-USCHO Rookie Team in 2019-20. A health and exercise science major, she is a two-time CHA All-Academic Team selection.

White, a junior center from Kingston, Ontario, scored a goal in Syracuse’s 3-1 exhibition game win at Union last weekend. She has 21 points in her career, including seven goals and 14 assists, in 48 games. A medicinal chemistry major, White is a two-time American Hockey Coaches Association All-America Scholar and CHA All-Academic Team selection.

A junior forward from Franklin, Michigan, Clemons has 15 career points, including six goals and nine assists in 49 games. She ranked fifth nationally in short-handed goals in 2021-22. The medicinal chemistry major is a two-time CHA All-Academic Team selection.

Leschyshyn, a senior forward from Grasswood, Saskatchewan, has 38 career points, including 21 goals and 17 assists. She also tallied a goal in Syracuse’s 3-1 exhibition win at Union last weekend. A communication and rhetorical studies major, Leschyshyn is a three-time CHA All-Academic Team.

Syracuse head coach Britni Smith will guide the Orange in her first game as the Syracuse head coach on Saturday, September 24th at #6 Colgate (4 pm, ESPN+) in the Class of 1965 Arena.
