Syracuse lost the first of a two-game College Hockey America series, 9-0, at Mercyhurst on Friday afternoon. The Orange and Lakers wlll play the series finale on Saturday at 2 pm at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. The game will be streamed on Stretch. The loss is the first in the 2022 calendar year for the Orange, who are 6-1-1 since January 1. A Syracuse (12-10-6 overall, 10-4-1 CHA) victory on Saturday will clinch the program’s first CHA regular season title.

“We have to put this behind us and get ready for tomorrow,” said head coach Paul Flanagan. “Today we were not prepared mentally and there was a lot of frustration on offense and defense. It’s my job to get them ready. We know we have to respond and it will take a collective effort from the coaches and the players. We still have a chance tomorrow to win the league.”

In the final five minutes of the first period, Mercyhurst (19-9-2, 9-4) scored a trio of goals to take a 3-0 lead. Sara Boucher tallied a pair of goals and then Kristy Pidgeon netted a third with less than two minutes left in the opening period. The Lakers continued the scoring with Marielle Parks, Boucher and Chantal Ste-Croix tallying goals in the first seven minutes of the second period and held a 6-0 advantage. Mercyhurst added three more goals in the third period for the 9-0 win.
