Syracuse lost at #15 Princeton, 4-2, on Friday night at the Hobey Baker Memorial Ice Rink. Freshman Rhéa Hicks scored her first collegiate goal 19 seconds in to the third period to get Syracuse (5-8-1 overall, 4-0 CHA) on the board and cut the Princeton lead to three, 4-1. Junior Sarah Thompson tallied the second goal for the Orange with 1:35 left to play for the final score. Freshman goaltender Ariella Merlino entered the game for the third period and recorded 13 saves in her first collegiate action.

Syracuse and Princeton (2-3, 1-3 ECAC) will play the second game of the series on Saturday at 3 pm at the Hobey Baker Ice Rink.

“Our third period was our best period tonight,” said head coach Britni Smith. “Rhéa’s goal 19 seconds in was the spark that we needed. It was a great pass from Tatum to Rhéa, who was driving the back post. It is nice to see them connect like that. Ari (Merlino) coming in for the third period with us down 4-0 is not an easy situation to come into and I thought she did a great job with it. We need to find a way for our last 20 minutes tonight to be our full 60 minutes in future games. We will see what made us successful in the third period and bring that into tomorrow’s game.”

In the first period, Princeton jumped out to a 3-0 lead on goals from Sarah Fillier, Dominique Cormier and Maggie Connors. The Tigers scored their fourth goal with 12 seconds remaining in the second period.

Syracuse came back with two goals in the third period. Junior Rayla Clemsons set up Syracuse’s first goal with a pass to White who fed Hicks with a centering a pass from the left side. Hicks one-timed the puck into the back of the net for the score. With less than two minutes remaining in the game, freshman Maya D’Arcy passed to sophomore Madison Primeau who took a shot from the right circle. Thompson when she took the rebound off of Primeau’s shot and scored from the left circle.
