ROCHESTER, NY – The No. 12 Utica University women’s hockey team and the No. 14 Nazareth College Golden Flyers battled to a 2-2 tie on Friday night.
Nazareth walked away with the shootout victory to gain an extra point in the league standings to draw even at 54 total with the Pioneers.
Erica Sloan (Potsdam, NY/St. Lawrence Steel) and Carly Stefanini (Framingham, MA/Brooks School) scored for the Pioneers while Georgiana Santullo (Woburn, MA/Boston Shamrocks/Woburn High School) assisted on both goals and Hailey Modlin (Phoenix, AZ/Boston Shamrocks) on one. In goal, Angela Hawthorne (Santa Clara, CA/Meijer) made 34 saves in her return between the pipes.
The game opened with a quiet first period for both teams as Nazareth led the way with a 14-9 shot on goal advantage in a scoreless frame.
However, the home team struck in the second period at 8:53 and then again at 17:02 to enter the third period up 2-0. The Golden Flyers did so despite being outshot in the period by the Pioneers 12-11.
Just under four minutes into the final period, Sloan put the team on the board with a goal at 3:55 to get within striking distance. Just over 1:30 later, Stefanini evened the game with a goal at 5:34. The sides remained scoreless from there as the game went into overtime.
In overtime, Hawthorne saved all six Nazareth shots while Utica fired off two on goal to force a shootout which the Golden Flyers would walk away with.
No. 12 Utica (20-1-3, 17-0-2 UCHC) and No. 14 Nazareth will meet again at 3 p.m. on Saturday in the final regular season game of the season. The winner will be crowned the 2022-23 UCHC regular season champions.
