Mustangs Start Season 2-0 Behind Young’s 81 Saves

Fredonia State (0-1-0 (0-1-0 SUNYAC)) – 3

Morrisville opened their season with a 4-3 overtime victory over Fredonia Friday night. Eric Melso got the Mustangs on the board with a power-play tally at the 9:44 mark of the first. Fredonia tied it up before the end of the period then took a 2-1 lead only 36 seconds into the second period.

Nick DeVito made it a 2-2 game with his short handed goal at 12:10 of the period. Fredonia took the lead once again at 6:58 of the third, but just about three minutes later Melso found the back of the net again to make it 3-3.

Melso capped off the hat-trick in overtime with only 22 seconds remaining. DeVito fed the puck into the slot where a streaking Melso deflected the puck through the five-hole and into the net. Jared young stood strong in goal finishing the game with 41 saves and an assist.

After a stalemate first period, DeVito continued added to his 3 points from Friday night by scoring a goal at 1:14 of the second. Fredonia scored two power-play goals, but an Austin Johnson goal locked the score at 2-2 with a period left to play. At 13:40 of the period DeVito scored his second of the game to give the Mustangs back-to-back wins. Young made another 40 saves to help his team to a 2-0 record.
