Men's hockey edged 3-2 in overtime by Colby in NESCAC quarterfinals – Hamilton College

CLINTON, N.Y. – Colby College’s Dan Juzych scored 9:25 into the first sudden-victory overtime period and lifted the Mules to a 3-2 win against the Hamilton College Continentals in a 2023 NESCAC Men’s Hockey Championship quarterfinal at Hamilton’s Russell Sage Rink on Saturday.

 

Season Update

The Continentals, who were seeded fourth for the championship, finished the season with an overall record of 13-10-2. No. 5 seed Colby (13-10-2 overall) plays Bowdoin College in the conference semifinals at Amherst College on Saturday, March 4.  

How It Happened

The Mules rallied from a 2-0 deficit midway through the second period. Juzych’s game-winner came on a wrist shot from above the right faceoff circle. Carter Breitenfeldt and Ryan Doolin had the assists. Tyler Crist started Colby’s comeback on his goal with 6:34 left in the second period. Jake MacDonald and Jack Sullivan picked up the assists. Alex Bourhas tied the score on a power-play goal with 3:37 remaining in the second. Doolin and Max O’Brien collected the assists. Ben Zimmerman ’26 put Hamilton up 1-0 with 7:18 to go in the first period. Sam MacBean ’23 made it 2-0 on a shot from the right faceoff circle 7:40 into the second period.  

Notes

Charlie Archer ’25 made 30 saves for the Continentals. Andy Beran stopped 33 shots for the Mules. Sullivan had four of Colby’s 18 blocked shots. Zimmerman scored his seventh goal and led Hamilton with 23 points this season. MacBean tallied the second goal of his career with the Continentals. Nick Hawkins ’23 ended up with his 11th assist this season and 36th career point at Hamilton. Sean McAvoy ’23 finished with four assists and seven points in 2022-23. Cade Groton ’23 won 11 of 19 faceoffs for the Continentals. Hamilton and the Mules split their two games during the regular season as each one won on their home ice. The Continentals were 0-for-3 on the power play while Colby was 1-for-2. Hamilton has hosted a conference quarterfinal in six out of the last seven championships. The Mules defeated the Continentals 6-4 in the 2022 conference semifinals.
