Hamilton College’s Max Wutzke ’24 and Cade Groton ’23 scored in the third period and the Continentals edged SUNY Canton 3-2 in SUNY Potsdam’s North Country Tournament at Maxcy Ice Arena on Saturday.

Hamilton picked up its first win of 2022-23 and is now 1-2-0 overall. The Roos dropped to 3-5-0.
How It Happened
James Philpott ’25 gave the Continentals a 1-0 lead just 54 seconds into the first period with his second goal at Hamilton. The Continentals held their one-goal advantage until Canton’s Brendan Morrow tied the score with 3:03 left in the second period. Wutzke put Hamilton back in front at 5:51 of the third period with his second career goal for the Continentals. Max Bulawka ’26 registered the assist for his first point this season. Groton provided an important insurance goal with 8:52 remaining. Nick Hawkins ’23 was credited with the assist. The Roos pulled their goaltender for an extra skater and they scored a short time later as Filip Jakobsson made it 3-2 with 57 seconds to go. Canton was able to get its goaltender off the ice again for one last push in the final seconds. Charlie Archer ’25 turned away a shot by Sam Martin and preserved the victory.
Notes
Archer finished with 26 saves including 13 in the second period. He has a 2.03 goals against average and .931 save percentage this season. Groton has seven career goals and 15 points at Hamilton. Hawkins collected his 14th career assist and 21st points with the Continentals. Fred Allaire ’23 won 10 of 14 faceoffs and Groton won 10 of 15 as Hamilton won 35 of 59 as a team. Morrow ended up with a goal and an assist, and Evan Pringle had two helpers for the Roos. Filip Schlyter made 20 stops for Canton. The Continentals were 0-for-4 on the power play and the Roos were 0-for-2 on their opportunities.
