THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED

The first period was quite a tilted ice surface towards the Lakers offensive zone with Oswego getting off 12 shots on goal to Buffalo State’s two.

Although the ice seemed lopsided throughout the first period, the first ended with a 0-0 score.

6:43 into the second period, Ariella Haas broke the stalemate, scoring her second goal of the season, assisted by Kensie Malone and Lauren Jones

Just over ten minutes later after relentless offensive pressure by the Lakers, after a clean faceoff win by Morgan Shines, Kyleigh Grugin was set up by Avery Webster with a beautiful pass from behind the net, tape-to-tape, Grugin slid the puck five hole on a one timer to put the Lakers up 2-0 at the 16:50 mark of the middle stanza.

The Lakers took the 2-0 lead into the locker room, looking toward the final period.

After a penalty on the Lakers, Oswego’s goal scoring leader Ashlyn McGrath scored on a great short-handed opportunity, made possible by great defense play on the penalty kill.

McGrath was rewarded with a breakaway, putting the puck on a string and slipping the puck in the back of the net on her backhand.

McGrath’s team-leading twelfth goal was unassisted and pushed the home team’s lead to three goals.

The Bengals broke the shutout opportunity with a pass in the front of the net at the 12:53 mark of the third period.

Oswego out shot the Bengals by a margin of 45-13 in the contest and won 39 of the 56 faceoffs.

Leading in the faceoff circle was Malone with 15 of 21 wins, Shines with nine of 13 wins and Tessa Mucha with eight of 11 wins.
