OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State Men’s Hockey team fell to their rival, the Plattsburgh Cardinals, in the SUNYAC Championship on Saturday, playing a thrilling and close game.
Final Score: Oswego State 1 (17-9-1, 12-5 SUNYAC), Plattsburgh 2 (20-5-2, 13-3-1 SUNYAC)
Location: Deborah F. Stanley Arena & Convocation Hall, Oswego, NY
HOW IT HAPPENED
Plattsburgh scored early on even strength in the first period, grabbing a 1-0 lead. However, Oswego outshot the Cardinals 16-14 for the duration of the first period.
The Lakers found penalty kill success in the first period, shutting down two power play opportunities that Plattsburgh had.
The second period was just as close as the first, with Oswego out shooting the Cardinals 17-15.
The second period was Plattsburgh’s turn to kill two Oswego penalties, and the game remained hotly contested entering the third period.
The third period was even, with both teams having multiple chances. With around four minutes remaining, Quinn Warmuth and Trent Grimshaw both had shots that were extremely close to going in, but the Cardinals got the puck in the neutral zone and had a two-on-one that led to a score, giving them a 2-0 lead late.
The Lakers pulled their goalie, Cal Shell, with 1:52 left, and shortly after, Thomas Cahill ripped a shot to the back of the net with :53 remaining, cutting the lead to 2-1. He was assisted by Alex DiCarlo. However, the Lakers just could not find the time to put together another chance, and ended up running out of time.
The Lakers had slightly better success with faceoff wins by a margin of 35-28. Plattsburgh had 17 blocked shots, and that ended up being a major component in their victory.
