Hamilton College Men’s Hockey Begins Their Season On Saturday Night

By Scott Kinville.

The Hamilton College Continentals Men’s Hockey Team kicks off their 2022-23 season on Saturday night at Orr Rink in Amherst, Massachusetts when they take on NESCAC rival the Amherst Mammoths. This will the first game of the season for the Mammoths as well.

The Continentals finished the 2021-22 season with an overall record of 11-10-1, and in the postseason they made it to the semifinals of the NESCAC Championship Tournament before falling to Colby. Hamilton lost some key components to last season’s team due to graduation including forward Jordi Jefferson, defenseman Nick Rutigliano, and goaltender Sean Storr. Head coach Rob Haberbusch took note of that on a recent episode of 315 Hockey Live, saying “those are going to be really big shoes for us to fill”.

Even with those departures, the Continentals still return four of their top five scorers from last season. This includes leading scorer Grisha Gotovets, who recorded seven goals and thirteen assists as a freshman. Gotovets was named to the USCHO Divison III All-Rookie Team for his efforts.

Coach Haberbusch also took note of that, saying “We bring back a lot of scoring from last year, so that’s another thing we’re excited about”.

Haberbusch also feels the team’s leadership group is a major strength for his team. “I like our leadership”, he commented. “First and foremost, Cade Groton, Fred Allaire, and Nick (Hawkins) are our three captains and they’re just doing an amazing job. Most coaches will tell you if you have good leadership, you can do a really special thing. So I think right off the bat, that was definitely a strength of ours”.

Captian Nick Hawkins feels the team’s work ethic will serve the Continentals well this season, saying “I think the one thing that just popped right up off the bat this year has been work ethic, drive, and the guys on our team they’re ready to go right off the hop”. He also stated “They’re really showing effort wise they’re ready to jump in and make an impact and do what they can to get in the lineup. Then in the weight room, guys are working hard too and I would say gelling as a team, we can feel chemistry up and down”.

Hamilton begins its season with four straight games on the road. After Saturday’s matchup at Amherst, they travel to New Haven, Connecticut on Sunday to face Albertus Magnus. Next weekend they will be in Potsdam, New York to take part in the North Country Tournament before finally playing their home opener on Friday, December 2nd against Trinity.
