TROY, N.Y. Colgate statistically dominated RPI on Friday night in Houston Field House, but it took overtime before the fifth-ranked Raiders could squeak out the victory thanks to Tanner Gates’ first goal of the season.

Gates scored from the left side on a crossing pass from Kaitlyn O’Donohoe just 1:16 into overtime. Danielle Serdachny also assisted on the game-winner.

Colgate (11-4, 4-1 ECAC) outshot RPI (4-9, 2-5 ECAC) 49-16 in the game and won 30 faceoffs.

The Engineers took an early first-period lead before Katie Chan netted her third goal of the season at 10:42 in the opening frame to knot the score at 1-1. Eleri MacKay assisted on the goal.

RPI led 2-1 at the end of the first period.

Colgate once again knotted the score with a goal by Darcy Lappan at 17:20 in the second period. She redirected the puck fired off the stick of Taylor Kirwan. Gates also assisted on the goal. The score was Lappan’s fifth of the season.

MacKay gave Colgate its first lead of the night with her third goal of the season at 18:16 in the third period. Rachel Golnitz and Allyson Simpson assisted on the go-ahead score. The lead was short lived as RPI tied the game with a power-play goal with less than a minute left to force overtime.

It was just the second time the Raiders went to overtime this season. Colgate also defeated No. 10 Harvard 5-4 back on Oct. 30.

Hannah Murphy recorded 13 saves in net for the Raiders.

“As a staff, we were really proud of how our team responded today and found a way to win in the end. It was an opportunity for us to get back to playing to our standard and we did that.”

“I thought RPI’s goalie was really good tonight and they made the most of a couple of looks they had. We showed a strong team effort throughout the lineup. It was great to have Ally Simpson back tonight too.”

“This is a game we can build on. This is a team striving to get better with each passing day and I can’t wait to see our team play again tomorrow.”
