A trio of Orange scored to give Syracuse a 3-1 victory in an exhibition game at Union on Saturday, September 17th. Junior Tatum White and seniors Brynn Koocher and Anna Leschyshyn talled goals in the Orange’s first time on the ice with new head coach Britni Smith on the bench.
“There was a ton of excitement and a ton of nerves, which is to be expected,” Smith said. “Something we talk about a lot is being intentional within our game and with that comes our effort, our attitude and our commitment for 60 minutes. Moving forward its putting that 60 minutes together. Tonight we had our ups and our downs and now it is finding that consistency to be able to put it all together in 60 minutes. Early in the year our focus is getting better every period and every shift. First step of the process is today and now that we have that, we have some video and we have some work to do next week. We have to take it day-by-day and grow on everything that happened today.”
White put the Orange on the board first with an unassisted goal at the 6:03 mark of the first period. She corralled a loose puck at the blue line, carried it down the left side and put a shot top shelf past Union goalie Sophie Matsoukas. Syracuse outshot Union, 8 to 4, in the first period and Orange goaltender Arilelle DeSmet recorded four saves in the opening period.
In the second period, Koocher scored a goal just more than five minutes in on assists by freshmen Mik Todd and Sydnee Wilson. Koocher when she gathered a loose puck in front of the net and scored on Union goaltender Hope Crisafi. Syracuse junior Amelia Van Vliet turned away nine shots in the net in the second frame.
“Brynn scoring on the loose puck in front of the net was the result of a great first touch to put her in a position to score,” Smith said.
Leschyshyn gave the Orange a 3-0 lead halfway through the third period on a play right up the middle. She took a pass from White, carried it toward the goal and scored on a shot in the top right of the net. Freshman goaltender Ariella Merlino played the final period, recording 13 saves and allowing one goal when Union’s Emma Hebert scored with less than six minutes remaining to make the final score 3-1.
The Orange begin the 2022-23 regular season at Colgate on September 24th at 4 pm.
