Colgate Raiders Men’s Hockey Weekend Recap

The Colgate Raiders Men’s Hockey Team (1-3 overall, 0-0 ECAC) has not had it easy in the early going of the 2022-23 season. Their opponents for their first two games were the Northern Michigan Wildcats, a team that is knocking on the door of the top twenty Division I poll. The Raiders dropped both of those games, played on their home rink at the Class of 1965 Arena, leaving them to look to their next opponent to get their first win.

Up next on the schedule was a trip to Tempe, Arizona to play the Arizona State Sun Devils (2-4-0) on October 13th and 14th. Despite having a losing record, like Northern Michigan, Arizona State also received votes in the latest USCHO poll and is looking to crack the top twenty as well – as two of their losses came at the hands of fourth-ranked Minnesota-Duluth. The Sun Devils had an extra incentive for their weekend set against the Raiders, as after playing their first four games on the road, they returned home to open their brand new home at the Mullett Arena.

In the first game, the goal horn at the new arena did not get much work for the sold-out crowd, as only a total of two goals were scored. Those goals, however, were scored by the home team, as despite Colgate goaltender Carter Gylander’s twenty-seven saves Arizona State won the game by a score of 2-0. Sun Devils goaltender TJ Semptimphelter stopped all thirty-two Raiders shots to record the shutout.

The following night, Gylander and his teammates would return the favor and put together a complete 4-0 victory over the Sun Devils and become the first visiting team to record a win at the Mullett Arena. Ryan McGuire, Nic Belpedio, Colton Young, and Alex DiPaolo all recorded their first goal of the season, and Gylander made thirty saves to earn his first shutout of the 2022-23 campaign. McGuire’s goal was not only his first of the season but the Raider’s first shorthanded goal of the year as well. Belpedio, Young, and DiPaolo also notched an assist each in the game to go with their goals.

The Colgate Raider’s next games are on Friday and Saturday nights when they travel to North Andover, Massachusetts to take on the Merrimack Warriors (1-1 overall, 0-0 HEA) of the Hockey East conference. Both games start at 7 pm EDT and will be televised on ESPN+. For more information about Colgate hockey, please visit
