The eyes of the NCAA Division I Women’s Hockey world will be on Hamilton, NY Friday night as the Colgate Raiders (ranked fifth in the USCHO + USA Today polls) host ECAC rival the Quinnipiac Bobcats (ranked second in the USA Today and fourth in the USCHO polls). Friday night’s game will be a rematch of the first meeting of the season between the teams which took place on October 29th. On that day, the Bobcats defeated the Raiders 3-0 in their home at the M and T Bank Arena in Hamden, Connecticut. That game was closer than the score indicated, however, as the score was 1-0 with two minutes remaining when Quinnipiac sealed the victory with two empty net goals.
Not only will Friday night’s game have huge implications in the national rankings, but it will also feature two natives of Central New York. For Colgate, New Hartford’s own Sydney Bard is a key player for Head Coach Greg Fargo’s team. The senior defender has established herself as one of the top players in the ECAC and is a big part of both the Raider’s offense and defense. She has been named the ECAC Defender of the Week three times this season alone and is fourth on the team in points with twenty. Bard is also part of Colgate’s veteran leadership group and serves as an alternate captain.
For Quinnipiac, Clinton native Mia Lopata makes her return to Central New York. Lopata is one of the best high school hockey players to come out of the Mohawk Valley, winning the NYS State Championship with Clinton High School in 2020 (she was team captain and scored the game-winning goal in the championship game), and was a two-time Section 3 and Mohawk Valley Player of the Year as well. The nineteen-year-old defender decided to play her college hockey outside of the area, choosing Quinnipiac – where after red-shirting last season, she is in her first season on the ice for the Bobcats. In twenty-one games played this season, she has two assists, nineteen shots, and is a +4.
Friday night’s showdown between the Raiders and the Bobcats will be a battle between two elite teams that have top-ten offenses and defenses, and both feature goaltending tandems that are among the very best in the nation. The Raiders are led on offense by senior forward Danielle Serdachny, who leads Division I in points, and Kalty Kaltounková who ranks second in the country in power-play goals. Quinnipiac has the second-most stingy team defense in Division I and has the best penalty-killing unit in the country as well. A big part of the Bobcat’s defensive prowess has been the play of goaltenders Catie Boudiette and Logan Angers. Boudiette leads Division I in GAA and save percentage and is tied for third in shutouts with Angers among others.
Colgate enters Friday night’s game having won their last five games, while Quinnipiac has won three straight. Both teams have designs on not only an ECAC championship but a national championship as well. Let’s take a look at how they match up against each other.
