Two third period goals helped the Raiders force overtime and earn a 1-1 tie in Providence, Rhode Island. The Friars took a 1-0 lead at 4:55 of the first just their power-play expired. Colgate freshman Arnaud Vachon scored on a rebound late in the period to tie the game 1-1.
Providence scored another early period goal 1:30 into the second to take a 2-1 lead. That lead was doubled at 6:02 of the third. Jacob Panetta pulled Colgate within a goal at 11:03 of the third period assisted by Paul McAvoy. Colton Young scored his second goal of the season at 14:49 to force overtime. Despite having four shots compared to one from the Friars, Colgate couldn’t find the game winner.
This was the fourth overtime game of the young season for Colgate who is still sitting at just one win. Mitch Benson finished with a season high 39 saves that included 16 in the third period alone.
“I was very happy with our play tonight. We had to make some adjustments after the first and our guys responded. We got stronger as the game went on and even after falling behind 3-1 in the third, our guys never lost their focus.” said Colgate head coach Don Vaughan.
“Providence is a top-10 team in the country and we battled back on the road. Our young guys are figuring things out and we had two big goals by freshmen tonight.
Colgate begins ECAC play November 8th when Yale comes to town for a 7:00pm tilt. The Raiders will also host Brown on Saturday for a 4:00pm puck drop.
