#7 Utica (10-2-2) – 4
#15 Oswego (7-6-0) – 3
The #7 Utica College Pioneers (10-2-2) may want to start displaying a warning label for fans who may have heart conditions before their games. Once again, Utica won a nail-biter of a non-conference game against the #15 Oswego State Lakers (7-6-0).
Kasper Kjellkvist (Curry College) got the Pioneers on the board first. Conor Landrigan (Binghamton Jr. Sens) got the puck in the offensive zone and to Kjellkvist, who sniped it over the shoulder of David Richer (Kingston Voyageurs) at 8:06. That was the only goal of the period.
Utica made it 2-0 within the first minute of the second period. Landrigan had his first goal of the night with a beautiful wrist shot. Rome, NY native Joey Rutkowski (Smith Falls Bears) and Brandon Osmundson (Hampton Roads Whalers) were credited with the assists. At 6:36, it was Osmundson with another assist. He got the puck to Buster Larsson (Syracuse Stars) which created a tic-tac-toe with Eric Holland (Brockville Braves) lighting the lamp. That was the end of Richer’s night. He had five saves. Cedric Hansen (Gloucester Rangers) replaced Richer between the pipes. That sparked the offense to score three unanswered goals. The first Laker goal happened at 16:18. It also happened to be Ryan Bunka’s (Kanata Lasers) first collegiate goal. Michael Gillespie (Lincoln Stars) and Jeff Solow (Merrimack College) assisted him with that milestone. Up until that goal, Gianluca Baggetta (North York) could have been charged with robbery with all of the saves he made. He would end the night with a total of 26 saves.
At 5:06 in the third, the Lakers found Baggetta’s five hole again. Josh LeBlanc (Kingston Voyageurs) got the puck to Alex DiCarlo (Pembroke Lumber Kings). DiCarlo’s pass got to Anthony Passero (Buffalo State), who slid it under Baggetta. The momentum turned in Oswego’s favor. At 8:56 the Lakers tied it up at three. This time, DiCarlo got it to Jody Sullivan (Ottawa Jr. Senators) who pulled Baggetta out of the crease and passed it to Josh Zizek (Nepean Raiders) who shot it behind the goalie and into the net.
As they did with Adrian, the Pioneers were able to pull out a victory. At 18:08, Landrigan stole the puck from a defender in Oswego’s zone and shot it past Hansen, which put the Pioneers up by one. With :45 left in the game, the Lakers pulled Hansen (11 saves) for the extra attacker. It didn’t work. The Pioneers are now 5-0 against nationally ranked opponents.
Utica’s road games against nationally ranked teams continue on January 17th when they travel to Pennsylvania to take on Wilkes University at 7pm. This is their first UCHC game since defeating Chatham University 9-3 on December 7th.
