The Orange ice hockey team will take the ice for the first time under first-year head coach Britni Smith in an exhibition game on September 17th at Union College. Syracuse will open the regular season at Colgate on September 24th.

The home-opener is scheduled for Thursday October 6th against Smith’s alma mater, St. Lawrence. The last time the Orange played in the Tennity Ice Pavilion, they beat Mercyhurst, 3-2 in overtime, to win the College Hockey America (CHA) Championship and advance to the NCAA Tournament.

Syracuse will compete in the Ice Breaker tournament in Lake Placid, N.Y. on October 21st and 22nd. The tournament field includes St. Lawrence, Clarkson, and Holy Cross. The remaining non-conference opponents include Colgate, Merrimack, Clarkson, Princeton, Post, Vermont, Cornell and Stonehill.

CHA conference play will begin when the Orange play a home-and-home series against RIT. The Tigers will play at Syracuse on October 27th and Syracuse will travel to Rochester on October 29th. Syracuse travels to Mercyhurst for a two game series on November 18th and 19th.

Syracuse opens the new year with home games against Colgate (Jan. 10) and Cornell (Jan. 17). The Orange will play four CHA conference game series throughout the remainder of January and February and then close the regular season with a non-conference matchup against Stonehill, a first-year program in the NEWHA conference.

The 2022-23 roster includes 16 returning players, including 2022 CHA Goaltender of the Year, CHA All-Tournament and All-CHA First Team honoree Arielle DeSmet, 2022 CHA Best Defensive Forward and All-CHA Second Team honoree Lauren Bellefontaine, and 2022 CHA All-Rookie team selections Madison Primeau and Sarah Marchand.

Smith, a 2010 graduate of St. Lawrence has coached at Clarkson for eight years and has served in coaching roles with Hockey Canada since 2014, she was a 2010 Patty Kazmier Memorial Award top-10 finalist as a defenseman for the Saints.
